Canal du Midi

Happy New Year! We are planning a trip in May to do a portion of the Canal du Midi from Beziers to Homps. We are flying in and out of Barcelona and also plan to spend a few days exploring Barcelona before taking a train to Beziers to begin our week long canal barge trip. After that we are planning on spending another 10 days exploring the south of France. We are looking for suggestions on must see towns to visit. We are thinking we would rent a car and head out but haven't really thought about our route yet. Most likely, we would head towards Montpelier, Arles, etc but at this point are not planning on Cannes or Monaco although I would like to visit Eze. Not sure we would do that on this trip though.

Typically, we like to stay two nights in each location before moving on.

I would love to hear any and all suggestions for this trip as we start to plan. Thank you.

On the way toward Montpelier I would recommend stopping at Narbonne to see the unfinished, yet massive and beautiful cathedral. Pezenas is also lovely and well worth a stop with it's artists and beautiful, winding pedestrian streets. If you like wine then stop at the Abbaye de Valmagne near Pezenas - one of the prettiest wineries in this part of France IMHO.

Thank you for the suggestions. We will be seeing Pezenas and Narbonne while on our barge cruise. Looking for suggestions after the cruise if anyone has any other suggestions I would love to hear.
