Canal boating the Canal du Midi, Provence

Hi, all. This is my 2nd post! We rented a self-drive canal boat for a week in Burgundy last year. A great experience! We'd like to do it again this June and are thinking of the Canal du Midi. We've heard they're cutting down a lot the plane trees. Do you think the canal might be too crowded since it's so famous? Recommendations for companies to rent from? Finally, how would you say the Midi compares to boating in Belgium or Holland. thanks! Robert Wolfson, SF Bay Area, Calif.

We are planning our 5th trip on the Canal du Midi this summer - so yes, I recommend it. And, it will probably be crowded but we love it. We have rented only from Locaboat and have been very satisfied. They are easy to work with.

We have rented from Locaboat 3 times for cruises in France and have been very pleased with the company. Can't compare Canal du Midi with Belgium or Holland as we have never experienced the canals in those countries. We did Midi once (last June), and it was lovely weather. The town of Narbonne was delightful as a mooring place, markets and shops and touristic sites all within easy walking distance. We didn't go in the opposite direction as far as Carcassonne; it seems to be very congested. Did notice some tree clearing, but the banks and landscape were mostly verdant and clean.
