Can you recommend a smallish southerly, not touristy town south of Paris for Sept/Oct?

First, I'm an older female, in excellent physical condition. About 20 years ago, I lived in Toulouse for nearly two years. My French language is pretty good -- I communicate well but probably not with the best grammar -- around C1 level, probably.

I'm going to France in September for a month, at least, possibly longer. For the first two weeks, I'll have my daughter, possibly son-in-law, and definitely my four-year-old granddaughter (nearly 5 at that time). For a "home base," I (we for the first two weeks) plan to stay in some smaller town somewhere south of Paris (I haven't figured out where exactly yet but definitely not a touristy place), and they'll stay with me there. Then for their last three days, we'll all be going to Paris to be tourists for a few days. I've heard there are great playgrounds in the Luxembourg gardens for children, so we'll do that, of course. Any more suggestions for activities for children?

Also, if you have any suggestions about a rather small, not too southerly, town I might choose to make my home for a while, I would appreciate any suggestions. I'm looking for a medium-sized apartment that will accommodate all of us while my family are with me and then just for me after they are gone. I prefer to take only trains for traveling and will probably rent a bicycle to use in the smallish town I choose.

The goal of my trip is just to live somewhere for at least a month, possibly up to my allowed three months, and improve my communication skills, enjoy living in a different environment for a while, and quietly paint (I'm an artist by profession). I don't intend to do any touring around after my family are gone and hope to get acquainted with neighbors in whatever town I choose.

Thank you so much in advance for any advice or info.

Salut, Alex. Et merci for la traduction en francais. C'etait gentille de vous.

Sorry not to have been clearer about how far south. Not as far south (or as large) as Toulouse but far enough (I hope) so that the weather will be a bit milder than, say, Paris if I choose to stay longer than through mid October. Maybe somewhere in kind of south-central France?? The town/small city itself is more important, even, than where it is located. Hope I'm not too vague still.

Since I don't intend to have a car, train access is important, just so I can get there and back when I leave France for the USA.

Actually, I couldn't either, but I looked at the city directly. Here's the link: http://www.ot-lepuyenvelay.fr/

I think I might be changing my mind a bit after seeing how far south it is. I might go back to an earlier plan, to stay closer to Paris. I looked at Fontainebleau some months ago and really liked it. It costs a lot more to rent an apartment (over Le Puy), but I don't want to spend too much time on trains, etc. I just want to get there (France) and go straight to my apartment and settle in. I'll play tourist with my family until they leave, and then I'll just hopefully fit into whatever neighborhood I end up.

I am concerned about the weather in October up around Paris, but I live in Oregon, so I know yucky weather in the autumn. Mostly, I didn't want to have to lug a heavy coat as I want to travel lightly enough to have only a carry-on. I guess I could wear the coat onto the plane both ways.

So, Alex, thank you so much for the recommendation of Le Puy en Velay, but I'll have to go to Paris at least three times, so that's just too much time to spend traveling, in my opinion.

I will ask, though, if anyone has any recommendation for an apartment in Fontainebleau, center-city. One was recommended to me some months ago, but I've lost the info.
