Can't use credit card due to 3D Secure

Tried to book some tennis tickets for Monte Carlo Masters, I tried 3 different cards and kept getting

Information
3dsecure-error - Payment refused. Your credit card is incompatible 3D-Secure.
Please use another kind of payment.

From my research it seems no American bank issues credit cards with 3D-Secure. Anyone know of a work around other than paying cash and buying tickets in person day of.

Read this old thread - it's over 3 years old, but may provide some useful context.

3-D Secure credit card payments - wha???

FWIW, I have eventually been able to get through the "escalated" support staff at two credit card issuers (Chase and Citi) and they were able to, somehow, TEMPORARILY enable my card to slip through this system and allow payments to go through. It was not easy reaching them.

Options to get around this:

  1. Call your major credit card company (don't waste your time with a local bank or credit union), escalate to some kind of "senior technical support" or whatever they call it. The first person you speak with may have never heard of it. If they kick you up to the next level (enough times) you will reach someone who knows what you are talking about. Maybe they can unlock the door.
  2. Anecdotally, some people have reported success using credit cards issued by Capitol One. I don't do them, so have no personal experience.
  3. In a pinch, you could do a wire transfer. "Wise" (formerly "TransferWise") is a reputable, low-cost option to send international wire transfers (I've used them). Do be careful with wire transfers, you have no recourse/fraud protection.

Chase was able to make this work for me the last time I needed to. It was not simple.

Maybe it's getting easier, Good luck.

Dear RafaFan,

I just went through this same frustrating experience trying to buy tickets for a dance performance in London. A visit to my banks as well as a long phone call to my credit card agency proved useless - they said they would approve anything I bought, but my attempts to purchase the tickets weren't even getting to that stage. I was being turned away immediately for not having 3Ds. No one really seemed to understand what was happening or how to fix it. I ended up using my debit card to purchase the tickets without problem. This is the next "chip and pin" for American card owners - we are simply years behind in the U.S.
Good luck.

yes, try Paypal. Or perhaps one of the new payment apps like Zelle or Venmo? Or call the ticket office during business hours and ask them how to solve the problem.

Update:

I used my capital one credit card which was denied, luckily cap1 DEBIT card did work. I just had to confirm code they texted to me.

I am going through this exact situation right now trying to book a Greek trip deposit with a Capital One Spark Card. Will not work after weeks and repeated attempts. Travel group says its the Card. Capital One says its the website. So infuriating!

I was going to suggest letting the CC company know you were buying from a foreign website. Then, when the charge hit the CapOne system it would send you an authorization code. I had that issue a few years ago. Seems you got it resolved for now.

I know of no way around 3D Secure other than using a debit card, using one of the third party payers such as Google Pay, or lowering the transaction amount. Visa likes to advertise that their cards are accepted worldwide, but this is simply not the case. 3D Secure and Verified by Visa don’t communicate with one another very well.

Capital One Quicksilver Master Card ? Anyone having issues? I used it June 2022 in Portugal & Spain without any problems. Also took my Citi Visa for dining without difficulty. Headed to Paris in 3 weeks with these same cards.

AKAIK, 3D Secure is not used in the USA at all. I've only encountered it when attempting to make transactions with businesses whose billing/payment processors are based in Europe. For example, I was booking a live-aboard trip on a scuba diving boat in the Maldives. The company was actually based in Egypt, but their payment office was in London. They were using 3D Secure, rendering my US-based, major international bank credit cards useless.

People in the forum have reported running into 3D Secure issues when attempting to buy tickets for European railway systems, other Europe-based websites, unattended gas stations and highway toll systems. So it most often messes with you at automated kiosks or other non-staffed point of sales systems in Europe itself, or when trying to buy something (from anywhere in the world) at a website that uses a European payment processor.

I've never heard of 3D Secure interfering with the use of American credit cards elsewhere in the world (I've used my credit cards widely in Canada, Asia and Latin America, a bit in North Africa, and never had any issues). Maybe I've just been lucky but I don't think it's an issue for transactions that take place outside of Europe.

@pj - refers to trying to buy in the U.S. from an overseas website, not using the card while overseas.
