We want to go to Provence after watching Rick's TV show. Extensive coverage is given on Nimes in the program, however it seems to be omitted completely from the France 2017 guidebook. Am I blind ? Nimes looks like it"s worth a visit. Please help.
Nîmes is in the "Provence & the French Riviera" guide book. The 2018 is due out some time this month.
Nimes is technically not really in Provence it is in the bordering region Occitanie
Nimes is definitely worth a visit. There are some Roman ruins there including an Arena like in Arles and the Maison Carre
It is easy to get to on the train from Arles or Avignon etc.
I stayed in Nimes 2 nights and took a bus by the main train station from there to Pont du Gard as a day trip very easily.
Thanks Darcy
I used Nimes as a base to visit the surrounding area a couple of years ago. Good transportation connections.
If you are going to Provence, do be sure to get Rick's Provence And The French Riviera book. His general France book has MUCH less information about this region.
As he explains in the book, Nimes was historically part of Provence, but today is not, due to "redistricting." Regardless of region, it's a wonderful place - my favorite in the area.
Thanks everyone.
They used Nimes as the first stage in the Vuelta a Espana cycling race this year. Smart move by the local tourism board (those boards pay the races lots of money for a Grand Tour race to start, finish, or even pass through a city or town in the name of global tourism promotion) because I suspect I was one of many people who went from not really having heard of Nimes before to really wanting to visit it.
Definitely looks like it's worth a visit.
Rick's guides do not strive to be comprehensive, but rather a "best of" though his eyes. Historically they are an extension of his tours, and of course he does not go everywhere.
In Provence, he favors Arles over Nimes and that is what makes it into his France book. Nimes is, as others note, (1) worthwhile and (2) included in RIck's more-detailed Provence & Cote book.
I always supplement Rick's guides with others, especially in the planning phase, so as to have a bigger picture.
Nimes is definitely worth visiting, we day tripped there from Arles and did the tour of the arena and walked the canal to the Temple of Diana and Magne Tower. We really enjoyed Nimes but are happy we stayed in Arles.
Mike
What Mike describes is essentially what I did in Nimes. It's worth a morning or afternoon to see the main Roman sites.
I, too, do what Adam does. I supplement RS's books with Lonely Planet or some others for details about an area or other areas not mentioned in RS books.
It's seems borderline foolish to just count on any one guidebook to plan your trip. Each one is going to be slightly different, have different tastes and different entries. I used to do TV travel shows like Rick's for a living so perhaps I over-research, but I would never NOT "compare and contrast" Rick, Fodors and Frommers. As noted, Rick doesn't go everywhere and cover everything (not a criticism) while the F books tend to be very comprehensive.
Hotel Kyriad Nîmes Centre is an OK modest hotel close to the centre and not far from the train station.
