From the FAQ page of the cathedral website in English
Is it allowed to enter the cathedral with my luggage?
↪ You will not be able to enter the cathedral with luggage, due to the Vigipirate Plan: however, you can drop it off at the >Rectorate of the cathedral, located at 16 Cloître Notre-Dame.
This is preCovid, but my husband was allowed in with his rather large "day" pack. He does photography.
I would assume a backpack is not a problem - but a trunk would be (and let‘s be honest, the sound of small wheels on stone floor in a church…)
Have not been there in particular, just my experience from other cathedrals in France and Europe in general - I always carry a backpack, and it was never a problem.
A “shoulder bag” is probably not a problem as they’re about the same size as a purse or handbag.
A full-size backpackers “backpack” that takes the place of a suitcase is likely what the website refers to in saying you will “not be allowed to enter with luggage.”
