Calling French Mobiles/Landlines within France Using a Canadian Mobile Phone

Hi there,

I'm wondering how I would call this number from my Canadian mobile phone once I'm in France? (Nice, specifically). My host gave me this number to call once we land: +33620******. I'm confused as to whether I should dial the number as it's listed (holding down the zero to get the + at the beginning) or if I need to add any numbers or take anything away?

Many thanks for your input!

You are exactly right, dial the number as listed with the + and you'll be all set!

Your phone keeps its Canadian number when in France. It stay (telephonically speaking) a bubble of Canadian territory in France.
"+33" is the country code for France. After that come 9 digits. Numbers beginning with 6 or 7 are mobile phones.

If, by chance, you need to dial that number from a French land line, you would dial 06-20-xx-xx-xx. Note the added zero before the six.

If, by chance, you need to dial that number from a Canadian land line, you would dial 011-33-6-20-xx-xx-xx. Note that you use "011" instead of "+" but you don't add any zeros.

The beauty of the "plus system" as I call it, is that numbers are dialed the same from any phone anywhere in the world. That number, as you listed it, will dial correctly from a Canadian mobile phone, a French mobile phone, an Australian mobile phone, etc.

Costs of these calls, of course, are another matter. That is a French mobile phone, and on many but not all systems, costs more to call than a French land line.

if it is a mobile phone, would texting be cheaper? That's what we did in Venice.

"if it is a mobile phone, would texting be cheaper?"

Almost always, yes. The exact prices depend on your specific plan.

I forgot to add that the "plus system" works for North American numbers too. Enter them as +1 and area code and number; for instance, Rick's office is 425-771-8303, so it would be entered +14257718303. Again, if you do this, you can just hit "send" and the call or text will go through, anywhere in the world. When I first tried this, I was worried that if I did this at home, I would still be billed for an international call. But I wasn't; the phone "knows" where you are and bills accordingly. So, for important numbers, I just enter them in the phone this way, and never have to think about them again.
