Calling a US cell phone in France from US

Hello, my husband and I will be France for 1 week away from the children and will have the international day pass with AT&T. I need to leave instructions with our kids schools on how to reach us. How do I instruct them? Do I need to give them a country code while in France or can they call our US cell phones as usual?

Thank you!

They will just dial your regular number.

This is why you pay a premium for a service such as AT&T day pass. Because it makes everything very simple.

Your phone keeps the same number.
Imagine it as your phone being in a bubble of US territory all the time it is in France. People just dial you the same way they normally do, they don't need to know you are in France.

If you are dialling them, it is safer to dial the US counry code for all calls to the US (+1), and the French code for all calls to French numbers (+33), that is then unambiguous.

If the OP’s phone is on airplane mode, will she still receive calls?

No, and can't make calls out either. All radio is disabled in flight mode, just in case it interferes with aircraft systems.

Use WhatsApp or Facebook to chat and you don’t need to worry about cell phone charges

Note that even with an international plan that allows low cost calls within Europe that this doesn't apply to US calls which are incredibly expensive (unless you have a specific plan for US/Europe calls). The typical tourist traveler plan doesn't cover that. There are plans that cover US/Europe for another hefty monthly charge. We got a lot of junk calls from our pharmacy that didn't hang up even though we didn't pick them up and got a big bill for those annoying calls (I had done everything I could to turn them off but they didn't -- the other fun is that they arrived at 3 am which was delightful if I had forgotten to turn the ringer off when we went to bed.)

Well of course it depends on your plan but 10$ a day is ridiculous. It would cost us $600 extra for a typical trip -- our Tmobile international plan for Europe charges by the call and is fairly cheap BUT it doesn't cover calls to the US which would be a different plan but not one that would hit us for $600 extra for a trip. If you actually need to call the US a lot then use a computer calling service or rent an apartment with a French phone that includes international calls or get a plan that covers US/Europe calling.

For a savings of $600 you could justify going to extra work to find a cheeper method.

Indeed.

Which is why Kaeleku mentioned Google Fi.
