Have you been to the Calanques? Is it very scenic and worth a stop coming from the Riviera to Provence? Are they more interesting from the water or walking along the cliff tops?
We took a boat tour from Cassis, and yes, I'd say they are very scenic and worth the stop. My impression was that the view was probably better from the water, but a hike along the cliffs would be a very different experience.
Cassis was definitely a highlight of my trip====the Calanques that is, the city not so much.
While in Marseille, I took a boat from Vieux Porte past Chateau d'If and west to the calanques. Highly recommended.
The Calenques are fabulous and I thought that on my first two visits which each only involved a moderate hike down from the cliff (from the Youth Hostel La Fontasse) and a long swim at one spot. Most recently, I got the full view with a boat excursion from Marseille, which doesn't give you any swimming option, except in high season. So you can take an overview or an immersion, and hike or ride. Note that some beaches and trails get filled early in high season and then the path will be closed for the day.
