cab method of payment

Do most cabbies except credit cards in France? Specifically Paris & Bordeaux. Question applies to Spain and Italy as well.

I believe you're asking because you plan to take some longer cab rides to/from airports in each city. But it would be a safer plan to get cash from an ATM at your arrival airport and to keep plenty in stock throughout your trip.

But don't assume that a cabbie will accept your card.

I have always used cash. I would never get in without asking, and without the cash just in case.

I have a philosophy that says the fewer times I use my card for small purchases the better , security wise. I use mine for hotel bills, train tickets, and more expensive dinners. I also would consider using it for the major museums, but I just don't like handing it off to any Tom Dick or Harry, which sorry , is taxi driver catergory to me!

PS . I think Visa( Carte Bleu) is one of the most accepted cards, but Amex is one of the least( especially in smaller establishments.

In my experience, most taxis in Italy do not take credit cards. I only took a few cabs in France but always paid cash.

Hi,

I would strongly suggest having the necessary cash on hand, even if you see the Visa logo on the cab itself. You want to pay with a card, fine, if the cab accepts it after the ride regardless what the logo shows. What happens at the end of the ride and the driver says that his hand held apparatus for the credit is out of order. Likely story? May be true, may be not, since he just wants the cash instead. I've only taken a taxi once to the airport from the hotel, (always use the RER instead), was told the credit card would be accepted but had the cash on me to cover it anyway. When it came time to pay, he tells me that "apparatus" wasn't working. Sure. I had to pay the 40+ Euro in cash. This was going from the hotel to CDG.

For my ride to CDG from downtown the concierge strongly suggested I have enough cash to pay for the trip. In the past I had one of my cards rejected by the cabbie, but I handed him another and it worked. You never know.
