Buying TER train tickets ahead of time?

Hello-
Will be doing a day trip from Strasbourg to Colmar in November. We will take the TER train and we do not know what specific time we will travel- depends on when we are up and ready (have a kiddo) and not sure how long we will stay- so we want to be able to just jump on what train is next when it is time.

I believe those are local train that the rate does not change, so no need to book in advance, just buy at the station. What if I I just want to make it a little simpler and buy ahead of time? On of the SNCF connect you can choose a specific train - but if I do that, am I locked in to that train or just a train that day? Baring something crazy- our date won't change, so would rather do that the day or two before we leave for Europe if possible

thanks!

You can buy the ticket on line, and if you buy a normal one you can use any train on the day, so you are flexible.

thanks for confirming Wengen - I appreciate it! not sure if the kiddo gets a discount, but at least I know I won't accidentally miss it if I buy via machine at the station.

She is 6. I guess I didn’t say it earlier because the website has me out it in so I assume it charges correctly. At the station (from previous experience in other countries) the machines aren’t always as obvious.

if you buy a ticket ahead of time when the price is always the same you can be out the price of the ticket if your plans change. If you buy it just before travel you won't have that risk.

I often only buy my TER tickets either night before or a few hours before I want to go. Even though I'm in a different region, I purchased my TER (and DBB) tickets from Strasbourg the same way during the Christmas market season (the week before Christmas.) We had no problems getting seats/tickets.

I’m just recently back from that area.
I took a day trip to Colmar from Mulhouse one day and bought my train tickets at the station.
There were different prices depending on which rail service, but only different by a couple of Euro.
The one thing I found odd was that you had to put in your email address to get a ticket, which was then on your phone only ….no paper ticket.
So keep your phone charged.

By the way: I took six trips by train around France, and only had my ticket checked once by an official.
I didn’t even see officials on the trains.
Five were prebooked tickets.
Just walked on and off.
Wonder how much money the train services are losing……..
