Butte aux Cailles area

Hi,

We're looking for dinner recommendations for the Butte aux Cailles area on a Monday.

Would anyone have any experience eating at either of these restaurants in Paris--

Le Vaudésir
Restaurant l'Excuse

We're hoping to find a nice little place for a Monday evening dinner. Le Vaudesir isn't open on Monday (or is Verbalon as I just discovered). If Le Vaudesir id recommended highly enough, we may try to fit it in another evening.

I would love other recommendations too. Thanks.

Le Temps de Cerises has long been our fave restaurant in the entire city. It is a funky-boho coop, and the food is home-cooked style. More casual than not. No reservations.
*DO NOT confuse it with the chi-chi cafe of the exact same name up in le Marais.
Good luck!

Le Temps de Cerise is right in the heart of the Butte aux Cailles -- I don't find the food all that -- but it is also surrounded by sidewalk cafes for an after dinner drink or dessert.

Our favorite in the areas i Verbalon on Tolbiac just below the Butte -- reserve a day or so ahead. Classic small couple run restaurant with limited menu. We have never had a bad meal there.

Jane, I think I got the idea of Verbalon from reading your posts :) That was going to be our choice until I just discovered that it isn't open on Mondays and that's when we'll be there :( Other suggestions?

Chez Gladines doesn't take reservations and shoehorns you into spaces sharing tables. It serves big messy platters of pretty good Basque food and is not pricey. The food is tasty. It is a chain. A couple is likely to be seated fairly quickly as spaces open up; there are often larger groups of young people waiting but they may seat a couple first as a space opens up. An entirely different experience than a restaurant or even a cafe, but tasty.
We usually eat there at least once on a trip and I will probably take my daughter and small grandson there this spring as it will be easy to share food with a child. I usually order escallop de veau -- breaded veal with mushroom sauce. Lots of tasty choices and lots of great looking appetizers to share.

WE occasionally eat at cafes along Blvd Butte aux Cailles with Melecasse being our favorite. We usually go there for drinks before or after dinner and sit on the sidewalk or just inside the open window walls. We sometimes stay for dinner and they often have decent specials and always have things like burgers and fish and chips. It is cafe food, but decent enough and we enjoy the ambience. It isn't a food destination but the food is fine. They have a very good planche i.e. charcuterie and cheese platter; we sometimes meet friends for apero and planche and don't bother to get dinner after that. One planche plus a basket or two of fries and drinks is enough for four of us for a light meal.
