Bus from Geneva Airport to Annecy

Hi everyone,

My husband and I are flying in to GVA (arriving about 1pm) and then going straight from there to Annecy by bus (well, that's the plan).

I'm just curious to know if anyone has taken the bus (I believe it's #272) on this route because there doesn't seem to be much information about where exactly you catch it, if you buy tickets from the driver or do you purchase the tickets from a kiosk inside the airport (or online), do the drivers take cash or will we need our cards handy, just that sort of nitty gritty stuff. So, I was hoping someone out there could share their experience with catching this bus.

And before anyone gets snippy (there seems to be a lot of that on here lately and, frankly, it's a little depressing), yes, I have read over the website for the bus company and the airport. I was able to find the time schedules and the prices, I'd just like a little more "personal experience" info on catching the bus and buying tickets.

I also notice there's a Flixbus that we might (big might) be able to catch. Does anyone know if this has to be reserved ahead of time or can we simply hop on and buy a ticket, if that works out for us?

And one final thing (sorry)...

We will unfortunately, be missing the last afternoon 272 bus that leaves GVA at 1pm. The next one isn't until 4pm...any thoughts on just loitering around the airport vs trying to go into Geneva proper and catch the train to Annecy? I think we'd just rather wait for the bus since it's less expensive and our jet-lagged brains might not have the power to figure out the tram-train thing, but I figured I'd see if anyone has any thoughts on this.

thanks!

I have no experience with the specific bus you mention. However, this is the link to the Flixbus website which should have all the info you need. www.flixbus.com.

hey hey Tammie
no experience with the bus. we were gonna take the train but it was about 2 1/2 hours and we said no way.
another option we found was a taxi from geneva center to out apartment in annecy (door to door). it was great and about a 35 minutes ride, 95E was split 2 ways with us friends.
taxi-massingy.com
gaelle owns the company and so fast with all our emails and we booked her. i know it's not the least expensive but so convenient, fast, & relaxing. we just added it our expenses and had a cheaper meal or bought goodies and wine to eat out on our balcony overlooking beauty of the mountains. store was right below our place. just another choice for you.
how long are you staying in annecy? we stayed 5 nights and it's a beautiful place to relax, enjoy the beauty and lake, roam around the city center and their farmers market, fondue meal, tour around part of lake.
any questions just ask. have fun and enjoy

Hey Princess P,

Ooh, that taxi sounds pretty handy and convenient, although she's now 110E. Still, it would be kind of nice not to have to sit around the airport for 3 hours waiting for the bus (I've done that before on other trips and those are such miserable hours).

As for Annecy, we're staying 5 nights as well. Our place is on Rue Sainte Claire right above a boulangerie, so I'll probably gain 10 pounds the first day : )

We're mainly hoping it will still be warm enough for a bit of swimming in the lake (did you find any favorite beaches) and rent bikes for a little spin around the lake. Other than that, our days there time perfectly to visit the Chateau Menthon Saint-Bernard, so hopefully we can make it there.

Any recommendations or tips or things-not-to-miss would be much appreciated, though!!

Oh, sorry, Princess P, one more thing....

How soon in advance did you book Gaelle's taxi?

Thanks : )

  • SwissTours, Flixbus, BlaBlaBus, and the 272 all run to Annecy. The first 3 have different schedules by day, need to check specific day to be sure. So there may be buses that leave before the 4pm 272. BlaBlaBus shows a 2pm departure on some days.
  • You can buy advance tix for the first 3, but I doubt there's a need to. For the 272 you can definitely just pay the driver, can't recall if they accept credit cards, but there are plenty of ATM's in the airport (remember to get Euros, not Swiss Francs). Note that BlaBlaBus is also a ridesharing service, so unless you want to ride with someone in their car, make sure you choose the bus.
  • as far as I know, all the buses pickup/dropoff on the south side of the airport. Exit the airport straight out from baggage claim, go across the first roadway, and then take the sidewalk to the next roadway.
  • bus station in French is "Gare Routiere". If you search on that in downtown Geneva, you will see that it's a 2-3 block walk from the train station. So doable, but I'd use Google Maps so you don't get going in the wrong direction.
  • in the train station part of the airport, there are a lot of shops and eating options, as well as a big supermarket at the far end (Migros). If you can't find a bus closer to your arrival time, it's not hard to find a place to sit down, get a coffee and pastry, and nibble on some Swiss chocolate to kill some time.

There should be booths for general airport info (they can direct you to the bus terminal) and
perhaps for the individual bus companies (may or may not be staffed) in the arrivals area.

Once you arrive in Annecy, it's about a 3-4 block walk to Rue Saint Claire straight south, across
the river. There are boats that can take you out on the lake. We did a private rental and they were
happy to stop for a swim along the way.

Thank you princess pupule, I will check those places out. We’re looking to go fall 2024 for about a week and it often helps to narrow things down if I see a recommendation. Thanks again!

Note that you also can take the train to Annecy. Price is the same as the 272 bus. See www.SBB.ch
This is local mass transit, so no need to purchase in advance.
