We will be staying approximately 9 miles NW of Beaune in a lovely picturesque village B & B. Does anyone have a recommendation for a reasonably priced tour to area vineyards and tastings? So far it appears that it will cost around $700 for 2 people for a one day excursion. We are on a fixed income and that is above our budget and would like to join a small group tour for a lesser amount. Does anyone have a suggestion, or do we need to do a self guided tour on our own? We will be there 3-4 days in August.
We didn't do any tours, but we like our visit to Patriarch in Beaune. It's a rather large winery, but I thought the tour was nice and I recall that we tasted quite a few wines. We also visited, tasted and purchased at Bouchard Pere & Fils. Their wine was good, but they really had some attitude. I think when we were about finished the employee realized that we actually were fairly well educated in wines, and probably regretted his attitude. I bet your B & B would have some ideas. You could even contact before you get there so you can plan, I have frequently made inquiries of hotel/inn/B&B prior to arrival
Thank you for the recommendations.
Did you have a car to go out of Beaune?
Also, any restaurants you would recommend?
I'd suggest either putting together some visits on your own, or touring a couple of the negociant houses in Beaune itself. We recently drove through Beaune on our way to visit 2 wine producers just past Beaune. One of them we visited because our friend's friend is related to the winemaker, and well went together. I can't give you a recommendation because you could never find it, nor probably even get in touch with the winemaker (no website). The other one was just outside Beaune, Domaine Ravaut (http://www.domaine-ravaut.fr/en/) and we stopped there because one of our group knew the owners very well. However, I think you could get a tasting there just by contacting them, although I don't know about a tour. In general, I don't think it would be difficult to visit some wineries in the area for a tasting on your own, although tours are a different story. Many wineries will list their opening hours on their web site, sometimes saying that an appointment is suggested, or even required.
As to the negociants in Beaune, I'm not a fan of many of their wines, but they do have cellars that are worth seeing. The one I visited, many years ago, was Patriarche, which had gorgeous underground cellars, but, in my opinion, dreadful wine.
We had a car. We stayed at Hotel de France by the train station. The hotel accommodations were modest, but the people very helpful. The restaurant was highly recommended to us and we found it excellent. We had a very nice meal there. We didn't have a lot of time in Burgundy, we'd like to go back. We had spent 4 days in both Alsace and Loire, and Burgundy was a stop in between. If you are in the neighborhood, Noyers-sur-Serien which is west of Dijon was delightful for a couple of hours. Another tip is that I enjoy the movie Chocolat and that was filled in Burgundy. You may enjoy watching it before you go if you haven't seen it. If you wanted to visit the town where the movie was filmed, you can google the name of the city. Something to consider is that we didn't know that the blood alcohol limit is quite low in Europe. I think we were fine when we were tasting especially since my husband is a big man. Where we probably were pressing our luck was our picnic lunches when we shared a bottle of wine. I wish someone would come up with some kind of shuttle running between wineries. So no tour, just transportation. In general, I do not like tours, and I feel like I'd really dislike a wine tour. I like smaller, friendly wineries where we can just chat with the staff.
the movie Chocolat and that was filled in Burgundy.
I had to check that, because I read the book (and saw the movie) and recalled it took place in SW France. And yes, it was set in a fictional town in the Gers in SW France. However, the movie was filmed partly in a small town in Burgundy, and partly in Beynac in the Dordogne. Maybe they couldn't find a suitable village in the Gers.
We rented bikes from a place near the Beaune station and headed on a well posted bike vineyard pathway. Went through villages like Pommard and Volnay. We cycled about 20 wonderful KMs, had a picnic stopped for tasting at several wineries and ended at a larger town (Chagnay?), put our bikes on the train and back to Beaune we went. The last part of the path was a tow path along a canal. The bike rental place was quite helpful. A wonderful outing and cheap too!
You can also go north towards Dijon. Speaking of which we parked at the Beaune station and did day trips to both Dijon and Lyons.
We can't wait to go back to Beaune. If you are up to it and the weather isn't too hot, biking La Voie des Vignes is wonderful. Bourgogne Randonnées is the bike shop where you can rent . There are other companies that do group tours on bike that are much less than $350. I'd spend a day in Beaune, see the Hospice and do some tastings in town. Spend a day touring the vineyards and wonderful small towns along the way. The owner of this forum has a pretty good book on this topic.
