Burgundy for 3-5 days/Loire for ?

Hi, we'll be in Luxembourg 3/31 and want to go to Burgundy. I assume TGV. Where to stop and what to see. Do I need a car. Also, is it feasible to go to Loire valley from here or should we go to Paris and do a day trip? Thanks in advance

Martha, I'm planning a trip that goes from Burgundy to the Loire; we are planning to drive, and it looks pretty straightforward, but I don't know how feasible the trip would be by mass transit.

If you tell us your interests, we will be better able to give advice on what to see.

There's a five-hour train trip from Luxembourg to Dijon that day, changing in Mulhouse. You can get schedules at the DBahn website. Dijon has a good art museum and historic sites, but Beaune is probably an easier base for the driving you'll need to do. Beaune is about 20 minutes from Dijon by frequent train, or you could rent the car in Dijon.

What to see in Burgundy? Depends on your interests. You could eat and drink happily for many days, bike or drive around the vineyards near Beaune, drive to historic places like Alesia, Cluny, Fontenay Abbey, Vezelay, Bibracte, and others.

Going to the Loire from Burgundy? Yes, you can drive, good stops would be Vezelay and Guedelon. I haven't done that drive but I'd allow a full day. Trains between Dijon and Tours involve changing stations in Paris, not worth it imho.

Going to the Loire as a day trip? Doable from Paris, with a fast train to Tours and a guided tour that gets you to a couple of the many chateaux. See the RS France guide for recommendations. Not doable from Burgundy. But I'd give the Loire at least several days.

Hope that helps, have a good trip.
