Burgundy and Rhone Alpes region in early July

We have just started planning our 2 week trip to France. We have already been to Paris and thinking of spending our time in Burgundy and Rhone Alpes regions. How much time should we allocate to each of these regions and what are your recommended things to do? Can we do these regions using public transportation only or is renting a car a better option? Also, if we add Colmar/Strasbourgh, will that be too many areas in one trip?

Would it be possible for you to edit your original post with additional information?

Things such as the following would be helpful for others to provide you useful advice:

What are your interests? Food? Architecture? Cities? Countryside? Wineries? Natural spaces? Sports? Nightlife? Shopping? Physical Activities? Music? Knowing that kind of thing would be helpful. In particular, knowing those things will help answer your question about whether you should rent a car.

Are there any specific sights you've already decided are a "must see" for you? What are they?

As you envision this trip, could you describe an ideal mix of days? For example, would it be sitting on a sidewalk café in Lyon watching the parade of people go by and then renting a bike in Beaune as part of a guided tour of vineyards and small wineries? Or would it be spending hours at Les Puces du Canal in Villeurbanne searching for antique home decor unavailable where you live? Or touring the ruins of Cluny and the network of Cluniac romanesque churches scattered around Bourgogne? Experiencing the peacefulness of L'abbaye de Fontenay? Or maybe you'd prefer the medieval hill town of Vezelay or the leg-straining heart pumping exertion of climbing the various volcanic slopes around Le Puy-en-Velay to see the views?
