Burgundy

My husband and I are spending a week driving through Burgundy. We would like to be centred near Beaune to rent bikes and ride through the local vineyards but also be close to Beaune specifically for the Saturday market. Can anyone recommend a gite or apartment that is convenient for the old town and local wineries. Or any other information for this particular area. We are flying into Lyon and driving north to Beaune. Thanks. Jacqueline Stewart

It's not an apartment, but we stayed at the Hotel de France in Beaune. It is right by the train station and a couple blocks, at most, to the old town. The hotel/inn is very basic and clean, with really nice people and a good breakfast. It has a very good restaurant. We thought the food was wonderful and priced well. They "sort of " had free parking. I want to say it was on street parking very close or something of that nature. I'm pretty sure we walked past a bike rental on our way to old town. We really enjoyed the very scenic wine route (Route des Grands Crus) to Dijon. We did a self guided tour at Patriarch which was enjoyable.

We just came out of Burgundy about two weeks ago (we are now in Naples) and we stayed at a great B and B in Puligny Montrachet called LES GAGERES It is a WONDERFUL place to stay with views of the vineyards from the rooms and breakfast room. The breakfasts are just beyond words the food just kept coming, crepes, waffles, eggs, bread, cheese, fruit salad and they just keep bringing more out. The rooms and bathrooms are great. It is in a traditional house just a minutes walk from the central square of Puligny Montrachet and right on the edge of the vineyards.

Keep in mind that all distances in the small wine towns in Burgundy and around Beaune are very short. It’s 5 minutes by car to Meursault and only about 15 minutes to Beaune.

Here is the url: www.les-gageres.fr

In Addition we stayed at another great place in the small medieval town of Montreal. The hotel Creme Anglaise run by a lovely British couple Graham and Christine and their dog Crumble. This was a true gem. And makes a great stop on the way back to Paris as it is near AVallon and Vezelay.

Hope this helps

Stayed at Beaune Hotel -- €72 per night plus €5 for parking, just a few blocks to Hotel Dieu, good breakfast on the terrace. No kitchenette facilities, though.
