Broken arm in Paris

My daughter broke her forearm (distal radius) here in Canada before we have even left for our trip. An orthodopedic surgeon reduced the fracture and thought all would be fine but thought getting an X-ray at two weeks to ensure it was reduced would be a good idea through a family doctor would be fine . On the slim chance that it wasn't reduced she could be referred on to an orthodox.
What would people suggest when I get to Paris.

jr,

I'd suggest contacting your family physician first for a recommendation as few of us here are qualified to comment on that. As your daughter will be arriving in Paris with a pre-existing condition, I'm not sure how that might affect your travel medical insurance? If you need medical care in Paris, it's readily available. You could for example use the American Hospital of Paris.

Good luck!

I think you should talk to your doctor about the ramifications of flying with a broken bone. There is a lot of research about increased risks of blood clots etc. when flying with an injury.

Definitely inform your provider. If he or she allows this, the cast may need to be bi-valved to allow expansion from possible edema from the flight.

My neighbour is an ER physician so we have been in consultation with him. He feels my daughter is good to go as did the orthopedic surgeon who we initially saw. We will bivalve the cast for the flight in order to prevent compartment syndrome. He will provide us with some fibreglass casting material so we can put another layer on when we get there. After two weeks we will get another xray to ensure that it is still reduced and also try to get someone to replace the cast as by then it will be getting dirty and probably a little loose. We will be in Sarlat by then and we have talked to the people where we are staying and they have a reasonable family doctor and an x-ray clinic close to them. I hope that there will be a casting clinic somewhere in Sarlat. My travel insurance will not cover the costs so we will be out of pocket but my daughter will still be insured for any other medical causes while we are there. If anyone has dealings with the French healthcare system I would be interested in hearing about their experiences. I am hoping that it will not be as expensive as the American healthcare system.

I have no personal experience with the French medical system, but you might check the American Hospital in Paris. It is a private hospital so will cost more, but They have an English website and it might be the simplest option as a tourist. They have contact info on the site so you might be able to make an appointment now.

I've had a lot of dealings with the system. If you have specific questions, I'd be glad to answer them by private message.

Remember to use gloves, latex or non latex, when applying the fiberglass material. It is very very sticky on the skin and its bonding substance can transfer from the roll, to your skin, to clothing or the lenses of your glasses. Years of experience with the stuff as an Air Force medic.
Enjoy your trip.

No where is as expensive as American health care, you will not have to mortgage house for treatments in France ! Level of care is excellent also. Language barrier may make it stressful though.

Just as a for instance, we get medical insurance whenever we travel. There are two rates.

Anywhere in the WORLD, or anywhere in United States. Rates for insurance for States are of course the higher rates.

The language barrier would have been the biggest obstacle we dealt with using a French clinic when we were there last fall. We were in Lille, though, not Paris. English isn't as common there. My daughter lives there so she was able to translate for my hubby who was the one in need of a Dr. The office visit was 65€ and that was after 6pm. Before 6(or maybe it was 7pm) the rate is lower. 35€, I believe is what my daughter pays when she needs a Dr.
Being from the US, I was expecting to pay 100's not 65 for that visit. I highly doubt an xray in France would be anywhere near what it would cost in the US.
