My wife and I are going to spend four days in Brittany in September,we are staying in St Malo and would like recommendations on must see places and and things to do.
Thanks
Mike
We were in St. Malo for the start of a Tour de France stage in 2008. Walk the shoreline, and see the tremendous, crashing waves when the tide comes in. Have dinner intra-muros (inside the old city walls), with gallettes, mussels, and cider.
Nearby, Cancale is the oyster capital of France (and, therefore, perhaps the world) :-)
Mont Saint Michel is less than an hour from St. Malo - worth the drive! I can't imagine staying in St. Malo without making a trip there. The coastline is quite spectacular in that area so take the smaller roads along the coast if you have the time. Windswept and beautiful!
Assuming you'll have a car both Fougeres and Josselin are about an hour's drive, both are lovely towns with castles and would make good day trips. Dinan is a walled town that gets lots of good reviews, I never made it there myself but I did go to both of the others. Any of these towns are extra special if you get there on a market day.
See the tapestry in Bayeux, It sounds dull, but was really neat! Story of how Edward the Bastard became Edward the Conquerer. In my book any time a person can change their name like that, its a good thing! it is a lovely town as well. Beautiful church to see and a fantastic creperie nearby too!
St Malo is a good base. In addition to the coastal towns, I would really recommend branching out toward Fougeres. My wife has a photo blog (graciamc.wordpress.com) that covers all the major areas in Brittany we visited ... coastal towns as well as inland.
Hi All,
Thanks for the suggestions, that will help.Anita and Yo Pauly, last year we stayed in Bayeux and went to Mt St Michel and the Tapestry Museum as well as the war museum, Honfleur and a full day Battlefield tour, just loved Normandy.
Thanks
Mike
Hope you have a car, Brittany is a very unique region but hard to explore using public transit.
Do try to see some of the small villages with their unique paris closes (enclose paroissial). They are located mostly in Finestere, quite closely together so you can see 2 or 3 in half a day. Check out these websites:

The drive along the coast west of St Malo is very pretty. Don't miss Fort La Latte, just before you arrive at Cap Frehel. This is where "Vikings" with Kirk Douglas was filmed ;-)
