Hello- we are planning a trip to Brittany area in October, likely in the area on the weekend. We are trying to decide if a private tour group is worth it or if we can get around to places via public transport. We have no agenda but want to see Mont-St-Michel, Cancale for oysters and likely stay in St. Malo or Dinard.
We based in St. Malo in May a few years ago and it was easy to get to Dinan by bus, Dinard by boat, and there was a bus to and from MSM each day. We didn't use that because we had done it earlier back when we were driving. We arranged a private tour guide in Carnac who took us to the neolithic sites and then to the train station for our return to Paris. You can reach Cancale from St. Malo by bus as well and we walked to St. Servan which has a wonderful old medieval tower. We had an airBNB for 4 nights in St. Malo and spent one night at a hotel in Auray for the neolithic sites.

St. Malo has wonderful restaurants but they are tiny and even with almost no tourists were booked up every night -- so be sure to make reservations or you get stuck eating so so crepes or fairly dire tourist trap food in the restaurants on the parking lot side wall. A day ahead was enough in May for us to reserve and I suspect would be so in August. We once visited MSM in late October; here are snapshots of how uncrowded it was then.

Great time to be there.
Thank you so much for the great information!
