Brittany Good Location for Hiking the GR34

We will have about 10 days in Brittany in May 2026. We are in our mid-70s, avid day hikers. We would like to stay in one location and travel to parts of the GR34 ( Pink Granite coast, Crozon peninsula) for day hikes. Any one with some familiarity with towns that would work that have lodging, restaurants, cafes, bakeries? We like medium to small towns, comfortable, simple lodging and casual food places, of course a market is a plus.
We have looked at: Morlaix, Le Faou, Quimper, Morgat...
many thanks!

Hi Do you have a car? Without a car, forget Quimper, Le Faou, or Morlaix for the GR 34. Morgat is perfect, otherwise, for the Crozon peninsula. The pink granite coast is very pretty, but I don't call it hiking. It's more like quiet tourism. This coast is very urbanized and it's not wild at all. Otherwise, there is also Douarnenez/Treboul and Cap Sizun, which have wild and very spectacular cliffs, as in Crozon peninsula.

Thanks for the reply, I meant to mention that we would have a car. Does that change your thoughts? The Crozon for hiking does look good, at least the few online videos I’ve seen of that area. I will look at Morgat re lodging and services. So the Pink Granite coast is not really walkable for a 1-3 hour hike?
Thanks

Hello. The Pink Granite Coast is great for short hikes, I just wanted to say that it's not at all wild, and at certain times there are really a lot of people on the paths, mostly casual strollers, not serious hikers. There's also the Île de Bréhat, which has pink granite and offers some very beautiful hikes. Alternatively, if you have a car, Quimper is very good for much wilder hikes along a cliff-lined coast, for example between Douarnenez and Pointe du Van (le cap Sizun )
. It's also not very far from the Crozon Peninsula. And for the Crozon Peninsula, Morgat is the starting point for hikes, but not Crozon itself.

Oh Susan. Spending 10 days hiking around Brittany’s GR34! You are there for a treat!
I love the fact that you’d like to stay in one location for your 10 days. You’ll get to really know the place you are staying in, the market, the bakery, the café, the residents!
If I had to pick one place, I think that Huelgoat is ideal.
You will be within 1h30 drive from so many beautiful hikes on the GR34 (including the ones mentioned above), and in addition, you are in a lovely town with good restaurants, and magic hikes in land.

The Crozon peninsula could be a good location for 10 days, since it also gives you the opportunity to sometimes hike on the northern coastline of Brittany (Roscoff, Brignogan...) and sometimes on the southern coast (Audierne, Penmarch...).
Douarnenez could also be a pleasant place to stay.

You could also choose another area on the northern coast, around Cape Fréhel, which lets you walk to the east (St Briac, St Malo, Cancale...) and to the west (île de Bréhat, Pink Granite coast).

Hi In my opinion, in Finistère it's best to choose between the south (including the Crozon peninsula) and the north, even though it is indeed possible to travel from Crozon to the coast north of Brest, near Lesneven, in a day. In terms of travel time, Quimper is closer to Lesneven than Crozon is to Lesneven. The problem with the Crozon peninsula is its remote location in terms of road access.

Beautiful photos! As for the medlars, there's no need to wait two weeks. I just put them in the freezer overnight and they're delicious the very next day!

Bonjour Gregglamarsh...wow! that's quite a trip report. Makes we want to live in Brittany. We also have a week in Paris prior to Brittany and you had some great info for that leg of the trip. Merci beaucoup!
