We will be in Brittany for 5 nights in October and will have a car. We will be coming from Tours and going to Bayeux after our time in Brittany. I’m trying to figure out where we should stay. I’m thinking it would be good to split our time and have 3 nights in one place and 2 in another. If it would enhance our trip and allow us to see more we could do 2/2/1, not necessarily in that order. We’ve never been to Brittany. We like history, nature, countryside, villages, cities. I open to hearing all options. We have been to MSM and have no interest in spending time there. I appreciate any advice regarding places to stay. Thanks!,
Splitting 3/2 would make sense, because Brittany is large.
I would spend 3 nights around Carnac (Carnac itself & La Trinité sur Mer on the coast, or Vannes and Auray inland make for good bases), which has prehistoric stone alignments and the beautiful "Golfe du Morbihan" area.
Then 2 nights to historic Dinan, with the possibility of a side trip to windswept Cap Fréhel or reconstructed but still impressive St Malo.
This is just one of many options!
I like Balso's recommendations. I liked the area around Carnac (stayed in Vannes on a Road Scholar tour) but didn't really care for Dinan. I loved Saint-Malo (also on the Road Sch tour). I loved watching the huge tides come in/out and the pathways to the little islands appear when the tide receded. Very cool.
Thanks for the replies. Pam, what didn’t you like about Dinan?
I enjoyed a half day or so wandering around each of Dinard, Dinan, Rennes, Fougeres and Vitre. St-Malo is very popular, but I found it overwhelming touristy. I spent more time in Vannes, Quimper and Nantes. I enjoyed all those places. The major city of Nantes used to be part of Brittany but was removed from that region during one of France's several administrative realignments.
It felt like many other smaller towns I'd been in in Brittany. We also managed to hit it at a time (in April 2017) when there were lots of traveling school groups so there were mobs of teenagers crowded in the old town area. We were just there for an afternoon but I preferred the "openness" of Saint-Malo even in the old town area - you could get up on the city wall and see the ocean and the 3 small islets which was cool. The public swimming pool is also visible from the wall...and it's completely underwater when the tide was in. All you can see is the diving board sticking out above water.
That tour also stayed in Quimper and Vannes before Saint-Malo and I liked both of them better than Dinan. I know many enjoy Dinan.
Ouch. The loss of Nantes is still a sore subject in Brittany, as is the debate over whether the Mont St. Michel is in Brittany or Normandy.
For nature/countryside, I loved the pink granite coast portion of the Côtes d'Armor. I spent a few days based in Perros-Guirec (at the excellent Villa les Hydrangeas https://villaleshydrangeas.bzh/en/) to enjoy walking the GR34 trail along the coast and it was so beautiful - I dream about going back all the time! I also spent some time in Saint-Malo (including a day trip to Dinan) but was underwhelmed and wouldn't rush back.
The Vannes/Carnac area is next on my to-visit list so I'm excited to see so many other posters are enthusiastic about it!
Thanks everyone. I’ve added an extra night. So much to see, so little time…
"so much to see, so little time" truly applies to Brittany. Do not be tempted to travel too far; driving is not very fast out there.
If you do end up driving between the Vannes area and the north coast at some point, Josselin is worth at least a coffee stop; it is a very attractive town.
