We will be arriving at the Best cruise port on May 1 at 8 am and depart at 6pm. Any suggestions as to what to do there? Is there anything within walking distance of the port? Is there a nearby bus / train/ shuttle to places of interest? Are there any tour companies that could provide tour in the area? We enjoy historic places, bird watching, geocaching, etc.

Norma's answer for Cherbourg works for Brest, too. Tourist office web site is http://www.brest-metropole-tourisme.fr/en/. As another source for a simple overview of a city, Google maps shows the physical locations of the tourist offices, museums, parks, etc. Although Rick doesn't cover these destinations in his guidebooks, other books may do.
