Breaking up the drive

I’d like to hear recommendations on places to stop to break up the drive from Chamonix to St. Remy in Provence. Mainly for the benefit of our children (9 and 6), since the drive is close to five hours. I’ve considered a stop in Voiron, with a visit of Bonnat and, depending on everyone’s mood, Chartreuse, but I’d like to hear other ideas. We will be visiting in July, if that makes a difference.

we drove from st remy to annecy ( we visited chamonix from there) we stayed in briancon for one night. the local tourist information there was very helpful told us to drive via the 'col de galibier' pass ( rather than use the tunnels etc) as it had just opened after winter. WOW what a drive and views. spectacular experience. we even parked near a car towing very large caravan at the top of the pass, ( as you do!)
hope this helps.

I’m very much looking forward to Annecy! We will be stopping there for the better part of the day en route from Paris to Chamonix after we get our car in Lyon. It looks amazingly beautiful! Thank you for the tip on them scenic drive, will definitely look into that.

Yes, Annecy is a great choice. But I'd definitely avoid Voiron, and Grenoble too unless you have plenty of time. We skipped Chartreuse, but it might be worth a stop.

I did a similar trip, from Chamonix to Arles. I chose to drive through the Gorges de la Bourne, it was a thrilling and scenic ride. I then stayed in a town in the Ardeche near the Pont d'Arc. I wanted to stay in Balazuc but ended up finding a place just down the road and ate dinner there. I was glad to spend a little time in the Ardeche area. I like it better than Provence (but not nearly as many big sights).
