Hi! will be around Beaune/Dijon/ Grimault from September 11 -15. What should I see and do besides drink wine?
Eat food with the wine, you'll last longer. ;-) And see responses to your other post.
What kinds of things do you like to see and do?
What kinds of things do you dislike and prefer to not do?
Love walking, eating good quality, seasonal food, being outside in a natural environment, love small towns, local food markets......
In Beaune, tour the Hospital-Hôtel Dieu, visit the outdoor market, walk the city's "trail of lights" at night.
Also, we rented bikes in Beaune and spent a delightful day cycling through the vineyards to various little villages.
Beaune was my least favorite part of Burgundy. Mainly because the town is constructed in the 17th and 18th centuries (I prefer older) and the half that's away from the tourist sights is fairly run down. I liked the center in Dijon better (but not the modern suburbs).
In addition to THE best wine in the world, there is a Celtic museum and archaeology center in Bibracte. Another interesting museum, related to the Roman victory over Vercingetorix, is at MuseoParc Alesia. There are a ton of picturesque little towns, one after another, separated by rolling green hills and farmland. Most aren't planted with vines.
I also went a little out of the way to see Guedelon, an open air museum where they are constructing a castle using 13th century tools and techniques. The castle requires all the specialties of the period, carpenters, masons, weavers, dyers, potters, etc. I thought it was really interesting.
we really liked the little medieval village of Noyers sur Surein.
I know everyone wants to visit Beaune when they are in Burgundy, but there are a lot of other great villages to see. We love Montreal, Flavigny, Noyers, and my favorite Chateauneuf en Auxois. Chateauneuf is at the top of a hill and at the bottom we like to sit at a little picnic table, have some wine and watch the boats go by. There is also a great restaurant called L'oree du Bois that has crepes but also wonderful full meals. For cooler nights they have this wonderful open 4 sided fireplace that is so romantic. Semur en Auxois is a bigger town that is sort of divided into an upper and lower town. Interesting photographs from the lower town to the top. Montreal is a tiny town with an historic church at the top...close to Avallon which is neat, too. Don't be afraid to explore this whole region...not just Beaune.
