Bordeaux wine country

Hello-

My daughter and I will be traveling through Bordeaux in October on our way up to Paris. I'd love find a small, romantic wine town somewhere near there where we could possibly stay out in the country. Any suggestions? I don't especially like fancy expensive hotels; small, quaint and even funky are preferred. The Rick Steve's book only lists St. Emilion. I though there may be other gems around there.

Thank you.

Hi. Bordeaux in October is wonderful, as it is much quieter and still very temperate. I'm guessing that you may be renting a car, so here is one suggestion, based on that. Rick is correct; St.Emilion is a great place to visit, so steeped in history and wine culture. My wife and I, sometimes with adult daughter, have visited three times over the past few years and never get bored of it. Its environs offer many opportunities to visit and taste at the many wineries, often at no cost. I have a recommendation for accommodations perhaps three miles NW of St. Emilion in the small village of Neac - the route there is nothing but vineyards as far as the eye can see! It's definitely out in the country (but perhaps the most expensive real estate in the wine world). Search for Chateau Tournefeuille and you'll find a small wine chateau house that only has about six rooms. The host, Virginie Petit, is gracious as can be, speaks English, and she and her family reside about 100 yards away in a separate house . Her husband Emeric is the winemaker, and a fine one at that. As a final point, we're tentatively planning on returning there later this year, perhaps in October. Enjoy!

Hi hgdjr81 -

Can you share more about your stay at Tournefeuille? What did you see there at that vineyard? A tour of their wine making and vineyard? Did you do day trips? I'm intrigued as we are planning a few days in that area at the end of August.

Thanks hgdjr81, for the suggestion on Neac. Are there wineries that you'd recommend for tasting/touring. We like smaller, family run types of places! Thanks!
