Bordeaux - what to do?

Anything you must see in Bordeaux? Tips on wineries?

We stayed at a rented gite in-between Bordeaux city and Saint Emilion. Although we drove past many grand winery entrances, and lots of vineyards, we went to a wine dealer's shop in Saint Emilion for tastings and recommendations. We got a great deal on a bottle of young Bordeaux, and hung on to it for several years before uncorking an incredible wine!

Maybe not a must-see for some people, but the gravesite of oceanologist Jacques Cousteau is just outside his hometown, Saint-André-de-Cubzac, a delightful town with a great kitchenware shop.

A bit north of there is a tower marking the 45th parallel, halfway between the Equator and the North Pole.

We enjoyed the coastline south of there - especially the Dune du Pilate. On our next trip in that area I want to spend time in La Rochelle.
