Re: Euro 2016-Bordeaux advice

My husband and I are taking a one week rivercruise from Bordeaux at the end of October for our 35th anniversay. We are arriving two weeks prior and I'm trying to decide where to visit. Have been to the northern part of France. Was thinking maybe northern Spain or Provence. Will be renting a car but don't want to spend a ton of time on the road. Any suggestions?

A suggestion would be to add the Dordogne, east of Bordeaux, as an area to visit. Sarlat has a nice old town area and there are quite a few good spots to visit in the area. Suggestions include the Lascaux caves, Ch. de Beynac, and the La Roque Christophe caves.

If you like wine, Bordeaux is quite centrally located. St. Emilion is interesting as are others.

Have fun,
Ed

The Dordogne is a good suggestion, as is the French Basque region or the Pyrenees. Provence is quite a distance away.
Here's s link to my blog; our most recent trip (in April) included the Pyrenees and the Dordogne. The Basque region was in 2013. http://mainelywinenews.blogspot.com/

I suspect (without having checked historical averages myself) that mid-October weather might be nicer in southern France than in north-central and northwestern Spain. Those coastal areas of Spain tend to be cool and wet even in the summer. If that is not a concern, I'd certainly recommend the lovely countryside, cute beach towns and such cities as San Sebastian, Bilbao, Vitoria, Burgos and Leon. I'm headed toward Santiago de Compostela now, where I don't think I'll be needing sunscreen.

Thank you for your suggestions! Think we'll do the Dordogne and use Sarlat as a home base.
