Bordeaux Hotel Advice needed

After touring the Dordogne area we are driving to Bordeaux to drop off the car, tour the city, spend the night and take a morning train to Paris. I've done a little hotel research, but would like opinions as to whether I have a good plan. I'm considering an Ibis hotel near the train station. Is this a good idea or should we stay further from the station? I'm primarily concerned about safety. I looked at older posts and didn't get much information other than there maybe some type of shuttle from the train station to the city center. Also any restaurants or must see sites would be helpful. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks for your time.

We stayed at the Mercure near the train station and thought the neighborhood was fine. Easy walk to get into the center.

Nearby we enjoyed eating atLe Passage Saint Michel.

I wouldn't stay near the train station. I don't think it's unsafe, but it's unattractive and there isn't much of interest. The Bordeaux tram network is very good, so you can easily get to and from the train station to almost any hotel you stay at. I always recommend the Hotel des Voyageurs (http://hoteldesvoyageurs.net/), which I've stayed at 3 times. But I always include the caveat that it's on the "wrong" side of the river. However, it's very close to the bridge to the center, and on a tram line.

Thanks for your recommendations. I made a reservation at Hôtel des voyageurs. The hotel looks lovely, good location and the price is perfect for a quick stay. Thanks too for the restaurant suggestion. I think we will give it a try.

That's great Lynne. I hope you like the place. While there are places to eat nearby, I'd recommend crossing the river for dinner, which we did the first 2 times. The last time, we arrived very late, and were jet-lagged, so we wanted to eat nearby. Unfortunately, the place we chose was terrible.
