Books and movies about Provence, France and Switzerland

Hello,

We are going to travel on the Rhone River in Provence from Avignon to Lyons. We will visit Arles, Vivienne, Tournon. Are there books and movies that you would recommend we read?

We will also be in Switzerland at Lake Geneva, Jungfrau area and Lucerne. Any book or movie recommendations?

Thank you,
Kathy

If you get BritBox, I enjoyed the Murder in Provence series although it is set in Aix-en-Provence instead of Avignon. Still, it shows beautiful scenery.

“A Year in Provence” is an absolute joyous breeze of a book. One of my easy favorites.

Besides "A Year in Provence," Peter Mayle has written extensively on the area including sequels to "A Year in Provence."

When I was in Switzerland for the first time in 2021, a Swiss nun on a train recommended the book Lend me your alphorn by Eugen Epstein. It’s worth a read if you can find a copy. It looks like Amazon currently has a used copy available.

Swiss Watching by Diccon Bewes is another good read. New copies available on Amazon.

M. L. Longworth has a series of 10 mysteries set in Aix. These are the books (quick reads) that the Murders in Provence TV series is based on. I also recommend the "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" documentary and a visit to the excellent recreation of the Chauvet Cave which is located in the Ardeche region about 50 mostly scenic miles north-west of Provence.
