I think you would get more responses by fleshing out your question.

First, you talk of agencies through which you can rent accommodations. While AirB&B and VRBO provide a brokerage for the listing of apartments and other rentals, you are the one who picks the property based upon the listings provided. If, for example, you rent an apartment from VRBO in the 10th Arrondissement, you are communicating with the landlord THROUGH the VRBO listing service. Any "success" or nightmare stories generally arise out of the conduct of the landlord, not the listing service. Likewise, the brokerages like AirB&B and VRBO don't "handle" weekly accommodations; they merely allow for you to find a property and inquire into its availability and cost from the landlord.

Pick an area of Paris that appeals to you. Then, browse list of offerings that might appeal and which are in areas of interest. If you want to know which areas would appeal, or which are "good" locations, you will need to assess your needs and wants, usually determined by reference to a good guide to the City. Rick Steves produces one, so do other companies like Lonely Planet, Frommer's, and Fodor. Do the research. Better yet, have your adult grandchildren do some research to help you in deciding upon an area.

When renting apartments, be aware that there is a 13 digit registration number for each legal rental. If the apartment doesn't have such a number, you may not have a rental when you get to Paris. Forewarned is forearmed.

Paris has the best public transportation system in Europe. The Metro goes nearly everywhere, and the stations are all over the place. Likewise the bus system, which allows for an experience of viewing the sights as you travel. Again, your guidebook will be of assistance to you in this regard.

How much money are you willing to spend for accommodations? Understand that an apartment can save you money because you may decide to prepare one or more meals each day, thereby saving you the cost of dining out for every meal. Good luck with your search.

Firstly, almost any vacation rental that is not someone´s primary residence is illegal in Paris. Most of what is listed on Airbnb and VRBO are illegal rentals. One of the few sites which requires owners legally register their vacation apartments with the city is www.booking.com. Legally offered apartments must list, in any on line offering, their city approved, 13 digit registration number.

Secondly, there are several agencies which offer a very limited number, just over 100, of commercial apartments which are authorized for short term use by the city. One such agency is www.parisperfect.com These apartments rent at rates similar to hotel rooms at 4 star or 5 star hotels.

Thirdly, owners who list unregistered apartments with Airbnb and other such platforms know that they are doing so illegally. These are probably not the kind of people that everyone will feel comfortable dealing with.

Lastly, many residents do not appreciate the constant coming and going of strangers in their buildings. Do not expect a warm welcome by your new neighbors when renting apartments in Paris.
