Book a river cruise in France

Hi! We are going to book a river cruise in France and are wondering if there are things we should keep in mind while booking? Like what is the best period?

The type of river cruise we're looking for is a private cruise. Examples of boats we're considering can be found on this website https://www.bookarivertrip.com. So we're not looking for big cruise ships, nor cruises on the ocean.

What can you recommend?

We're not experienced river cruisers, so all tips are welcome.
Which regions would you advise for instance? Any landmarks we should definitely visit?
Thanks a lot!

Though I’m not interested in the “Long Ships” plying the waterways of Europe, I would be interested in cruising on a smaller vessel. Sort of like the difference between a Globus tour or a Rick Steves tour. I’ve not been on the rivers yet so can’t advise the OP.

Trips of this type are typically turnkey - just show up and everything is taken care of for you. The vessels are usually old working barges converted into luxury accommodations with an on board chef and often a sommelier. I did one many years ago in Burgundy. It is a wonderful experience and a great way to travel.

@Tocard, thank you for your reply. So you'd recommend the Burgundy region? In which period did you go?

For trips such as this, consider along the Nivernais Canal in Burgundy or the Canal du Midi in Languedoc. Burgundy is really not that far from Paris and very easy to reach. Typically, these companies have buses available to take you to local points of interest when they are near but too far to walk. Lifestyle and traveling with an interesting group of people are important draws to this type of travel.

If you feel more adventurous, you can rent a boat and captain it yourself. It's also a great way to travel with family or a small group of friends. You are, however, on your own for meals and entertainment.

Thanks for the information. We are great fans of the Burgundy & Languedoc wines as well :)

Indeed, I read about all transportation being arranged. Also to and from the airport.
Some barges also have a small canoe to paddle a bit along the itinerary. We'll be traveling with our family and some close friends, so definitely good company.

Which months would you all advise to book, weather-wise..?

Weather-wise, I would think May or September would be the nicest.
