Bonnieux in Provence

Just wondering if anyone has stayed in Bonnieux in Provence? My wife and I are considering renting a place there to explore Provence. We are looking to go in May of 2024. Any advice appreciated!

What do you need to know?
I have never stayed there (only in other Luberon villages), but there are some very good restaurants (heard good things about l'Arôme for example) and there are a couple of terraces with really great views.
Bonnieux is very central to explore the Luberon. You can reach Aix and Avignon in about 1 hr., too. Arles is closer to 1.5 hours so not ideal but still doable. The main downside of the village compared to others in the Luberon, is that there is some through traffic, BUT improved traffic management made it better in my latest visit (2022).

Bonnieux is nice, but not sure if I would pick for a home base. Too vertical and less walkable in my opinion, but nice views of course. My suggestion would be Lourmarin. Very pleasant, nice galleries and restaurants, walkable. They also have parking and a really great weekly market. It's about a 20 min drive to Bonnieux. One of my faves in Luberon.

I agree with acechrist. Choose a less vertical village in the Luburon. Easier to negotiate, easier parking, just easier. I also love Lourmarin but also take a look at Goult nearby. We are staying three for two weeks next spring. We chose it for its ease of walking, a few choices for restaurants, Boulangerie, small market.

Bonnieux is charming but when we stayed there it was empty, not appealing at all.

I've stayed in Bonnieux and had a wonderful time. Even though it was early in the season, the restaurants were all open but it was still possible to grab a reservation on the same day. Some very tasty restaurants in the lower part of town, and some very good wineries on the outskirts (plus Capelongue). It is a bit vertical but not bad as most of the things you want are not in the upper reaches of town, plus you will likely also be going to the other towns as well. By May there will be plenty of people everywhere.

I would not pick Lourmarin if you want to go to the Luberon. You are much better in the actual valley, even though it is a wonderful town.
