boating between destinations in Mediterranean

I'm starting to plan a trip in Southern France and was just wondering if boating is a better way to go between stops?
For instance instead of taking a train between Barcelona and Marseilles, is there a boat alternative?

If there is, it's going to be a ferry, but probably not on that very route.

Regardless, it's not going to be the optimum way to travel unless there's an island involved (except for Scandinavia).
