My understanding from Rick's book is that there are 2 companies that do boat tours out of La Roque Gageac to Castelnaud and back. Has anyone done this and what was your preference?
Are you referring to the gabarre boat ride or to kayaking/canoeing on the river? I have never taken a gabarre ride, but I will say that we all loved kayaking on the river (ages 9 to 80).
I've done the short hour long boat trip out of La Roque Gageac on the Gabarre. It was on a Road Scholar tour right after the pandemic so not everything was up and running. The boat trip was a substitute for a museum that had closed early in the season. It was a gorgeous afternoon in October and nice to be in the open air. They may run the same route so probably not much difference if you are talking boats not canoes/kayaks.
We are doing the boat not kayaking or canoeing. Thanks Judy and Pam!
The two gabarres tour companies in La Roque-Gageac offer roughly the same prices, the same boats, and the same tour on the Dordogne River, departing every hour from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Choose the one you prefer.

Note that there is also one in Beynac.
When we went this past April, the two companies alternated hours, and looked pretty much the same. We just took the one leaving at the time that worked for us. They were very nice, and ran an extra boat so we could hear the narration in English, since everyone else on the tour spoke French. I think we went from the company on the left as you face the river.
