One of our party on crutches so we're looking for hotel or apartment or bnb for 3 nights with access. Any suggestions? Thanks
I cannot give you a specific recommendation, but suggest you check hotels on booking.com. If there is an elevator, it should be noted. Many 3-star hotels in France have elevators. I also suggest you call or email the hotel to confirm accessibility. There are B&B recommendations in Rick's guidebooks and there are other books with recommendations as well - see if you can find Karen Brown's book at the library - but my expeeience is that it can be hard to find B&Bs without narrow, steep flights of stairs. If you can't find sonwthin in Arles, try Avengon - it's bigger and may have more choices.
We have stayed at the Mercure on the south side of Arles. It does have an elevator. It is the only hotel we have used in Arles so I can't give suggestions for others. We have not used an apartment nor a B and B. How many people will be in your group? That would also determine which would be better for your accommodations. I do know there is a Mercure hotel just across from the Palais des Papes in Avignon. There is also a large parking area beneath the hotel.
Will you have a car? You would have to drive across the river into the city center to explore that area. If you are over 60, you can get discounts at Mercures. I don't know if there is a shuttle from the Mercure to the city center.
With a person on crutches, it might be better to take a taxi from the hotel to the city center. Looking for parking is difficult and the person on crutches might have to walk farther. A taxi could deliver you to the city center and you wouldn't have to worry about parking.
Having spent lots of time on crutches with foot and knee surgeries, I can't imagine that the person in your party will want to walk a lot. I also don't know if a wheel chair would be helpful or not. Still you are dealing with bumpy streets, etc. I loved Arles and Avignon but I don't think I would have liked it so much having to use crutches.
Being at the Mercure, just across the river in Arles, also lets you access the highways to travel to other areas, especially the Camargue.
Good luck!
The hotel recommendations in Rick's guidebook do mention elevator or no elevator in most cases. You should still confirm with the hotel itself whether there are any stairs from the street to the reception area or to your room. Try www.hotel-arlatan.fr or www.hotel-acacias.com.
Thank you all for your suggestions. Chagrined that I did not check my rs guidebook. Too many notes floating around. We have booked a room in Hotel Acacias and will enjoy eating out with savings. SALLY
