My husband and I along with our two young daughters will be traveling by car from Bilbao to St Etienne to visit friends. We would like to stop a couple of times on the way and were wondering if carcasonne would be the best stop? We were also told maybe Avignon. Any where else we should consider.

Both of those places are medieval walled cities which maybe could remind the kids of the movies. Avignon is also a functioning city with a variety of attractions.
