Biking through France

Are there good campgrounds for people riding bicycles in France?

Most towns above a certain size (don't know the minimum but certainly above 6000 to 8000 people) have municipal campgrounds, generally geared toward RVs ("camper vans" or "camping cars"), which are quite popular in Europe in the summer, but may have small cabins (sometimes listed as "mobil homes") for rent or provide sites geared toward tents. These can range from pretty bare bones to pretty nice, with playground, pool, showers, snack bar, etc. In coastal areas there are large emplacements with dozens of cabins for rent, but those tend to be snapped up in advance by vacationing families.

This website from France Vélo Tourisme on where to sleep while touring by bike might be helpful. If you don't read French you can switch it to English by clicking on the little flag in the upper right.

If you travel during shoulder season I can't imagine you won't find a place for a little tent and a few bikes. I go almost every year to France and prefer to stay at a camping-municipal. For a little tent and a car I pay most of the time around €10 for a night and that’s really good value for the money. With two persons and electricity (don’t cook so don’t need it) it will likely be a bit more, but not very much as bikes are (think) most of the time free. This website (hopefully the English version works) gives an overview of these campsites. Locate them with google maps, reviews can help you avoiding disappointments. http://camping-municipal.org/index.htm

There is camping municipal in most towns in France. When I cycled there, many were small, seasonal, and subsidized by the government. They charged by the person, tent, and bicycle and worked out to cheap for solo cyclists.
There are also bigger American-style campgrounds, especially on the coast and in tourist areas, which charge by the site so ends up being expensive if travelling by yourself.
Crazyguyonabkie.com and cyclinguk both have trip reports and discussions on cycling in Europe.
France is great for cycle trips.
Enjoy
