biking in Alsace

We really want to bike from town to town or between vineyards - probably beginning near Colmar or Strasbourg.

Has anyone done this and have a bike rental place or tour company to recommend? Is it hard to follow the route if you do it on your own?

Thanks

Last summer, we rented e-bikes at the train station in Colmar and biked from there. There were four of us. I believe the shop was called Colmar Cycling - Vélodocteurs. The bikes were in great shape. We had so much fun. We biked mostly on the wine/farm roads from village to village. We made stops in Kayserberg, Riquewihr, Ribeauville and made it was far as Selestat before heading back to Colmar. Our cousin had an app on her phone that helped guide us. The app is called Ride with GPS. I'd highly recommend this activity if you have a good weather forecast. It was definitely easy to do on our own.

We too rented bikes in Colmar near the train station. It was soooo much fun, you can ride through the vineyards on mostly a road that only the vineyard workers use. The little towns all mentioned above look like a story book! I recommend you get electric assist bikes as there are a few hills. Have fun!

I've done both of the above mentioned options, both fine choices. You can launch many interesting rides from Colmar if you want to be based on one place.

We’ll be in Alsace for a week in June with 2 kids. Do we need to reserve bikes in advance or can we just show up?

Alsace is a large region with dozens of rental bike companies. So it depends.

I suppose you could try to find a rental place to reserve ahead of time if you know exactly when you want to ride. Or you could just show up and there will be bikes, more so if it's not a weekend.

Kids bikes can be tricky, so if you need smaller bikes probably checking ahead is best

In answering your bike question, we did not need to reserve, we were there in Sept., lots of bikes at the train station in Colmar for rent.
