Staying in Nice in late July. Would like to visit Picasso museum in Antibes. Plan to rent a couple bikes. Has anyone ever made this trek before? Looking to avoid any dangerous roads, as we are on our honeymoon and are fit but not experienced cyclists. Thanks.
I haven't done it. Those roads can quite busy.
There is a train line next to the beach which has several stations where you could board the train if your legs or stamina or interest give out. There's a station in Antibes and three in Nice.
From the airport (St-Laurent-du-Var) towards Antibes there are several very large high rise apartment buildings (interesting shape and colour scheme). I don't know what the road layout or traffic is like near them - I just see them from the train or the Autoroute which is quite close to beach in that area.
Happy biking - I hope you enjoy your stay and the various art museums around.
I've not taken it all the way, but there is a bike path along the Promenade des Anglais, although dodging pedestrians as they wander aimlessly across the green lane is the biggest obstacle. After about 7 km it breaks away to follow the road near the airport and becomes less pleasant before resuming course. It then stops entirely just short of Antibes near Villeneuve Loubet, where you are left to street routes. Depending on timing, however, the current construction on the Prom towards the airport may also be an obstacle (they are putting in security and beautification improvements).
It's a short train ride depending on which part of Nice. Traffic is pretty brutish through the area, however, especially in summer when you will be there. This may help:
