Between Annecy and Arles?

Hi all, my wife and I will be driving from Annecy to Arles tomorrow. As our Airbnb check-in is not until 5:30 PM, we look to have 3-4 hours free to see something on the way. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi - we're doing that in reverse in July, to chase the Tour de France. The town of Orange is just off the A7, and has a magnificent ancient Roman theater - the best-preserved in the world. You could compare that to what you'll be seeing in Arles. There's also a small museum next door with Roman antiquities. We have tickets for an opera performance at the theater one night.

Joel, thats a reasonably long drive, last year at this time of year we drove from St Remy to Briancon. the next day we drove from Briancon to Annecy. opposite direction to you.
on a suggestion from the local tourist lady at Briancon, we drove over the french alps via a pass , i think it was col du Galibier, we left Biancon and drove over the pass ( at over 2600 metres) and then down into Valloire and on to Annecy.

you would be doing it in the opposite direction.

we have done many things in our lives but that drive was an absolute highlight. we still talk about it to this day.
the snow was still about 3m high on the side of the road in some places and on a beautiful day you could see for ever. the road was very winding but spectacular on both sides of the mountain, eg: you climb up one side and then down the other side.
there are other places near St Remy but you will no doubt see those when you are down that way.

Not a bad suggestion from glennlorrainer - we plan to drive over the Col du Galibier the day the Tour heads to Paris for the finale, after we've seen the next-to-last stage on the grueling Alpe d'Huez.

if you are looking for things to do in provence, we enjoyed, in no particular order

pont du gard, the van gough walk near St Remy, Gordes, Rousillon, the bories village, chateau des baux, fontaine de vaucluse, l'isle-sur-la-sorgue and the list goes on. a great area to visit. also good if you have seen the movie, A Good Year.

I hope this helps.

Cyn and glennlorrainer,
Thanks for the suggestions! That drive sounds wonderful, and Orange sounds good not just for the theatre, but apparently there is also a Roman victory arch there.
