We will have a car and are staying 30 minutes east of Avignon. We would like to stop and visit a couple of wineries, any suggestions?

It sounds like you will be very near the route recommended in the RS book on Provence/French Riviera: a circular route through the Cotes du Rhone (Gigondas; Seguret; Le Crestet; Suzette; etc.) We used it as an general outline, making fewer winery stops than recommended but greatly enjoying the views and twisting roads. Highlights: lunch at Nez in Gigondas (which also has tasting rooms in the center of the little village); and the drive up to, and tasting at, Domaine de Coyeux. http://www.domainedecoyeux.com/en/
