best way to get to versailles with a family

Will be in Paris March 18 -23 with our family - including 2 teens. A visit to Versailles is on their list - what are your thoughts on the best way to get there? Thinking of visiting either on a Tuesday (but it's the day after we arrive so likely jet lagged) or Friday, if that makes a difference. I like trains but the website posted all these warnings about potential disruptions to the schedule.

Visiting Versailles the day after arrival might indeed be rough, as Versailles is best done as an early day. Aim for the Friday. I would not expect any specific train disruptions on a weekday.
There are three train lines to Versailles. The RER C train to Versailles Château Rive Gauche is the best way to go in most cases.
If your accommodation happens to be next to Montparnasse station, you could consider the direct trains (N trains or Chartres-bound trains) to Versailles Chantiers, but in that case you need a bus or a longish walk to the chateau.
The last option, L train line from St Lazare to Versailles Rive Droite, is of little value to most travellers (unless there is a disruption on RER C)

Download the Bonjour RATP app for train/metro/bus info. Enter Chateau de Versailles as your destination and it will tell you exactly how to get there. Look into the Navigo Decouvert passes.

I would not go to Versailles on your first real day. You want to get there early, it will be a full day, and it’s very tiring.

There are always potential disruptions of service, and the app will tell you the best way to get there for your day.
