Best way to get to the 8th Arrondissement from Paris Gare du Nord train station

Hello. I have two questions I'm seeking advice on. 1. My group of 4 people (and the luggage) will be arriving at Paris Gare du Nord train station in the evening and need to get to the 8th arrondissement to our hotel. We've never been to France before. What is the best suggestion for transportation to our hotel taking into account safety, cost-effectiveness, and quickness?

  1. Also, ls the area around the train station a safe area? All cities have not so great areas, as does my own, so I'm just asking, not judging.

Thanks

If you've never experienced Paris nor Gare du Nord then you would be well advised to take a taxi from the official taxi stand. Gare du Nord is a seedy area.

Saying the 8th is still too big an area for any specific directions. What is the hotel name?

As a group of four people, you should take a taxi. Please do not go with any person who approaches you to walk you to taxi stand, etc. These are scan artists and you will be overcharged. The taxi stand is not outside of the front door of the station. There may be taxis parked there but it is not the official taxi line for pick ups. All stories that I have read about metered taxis ripping people off at Gare du Nord have happened when the tourist took a taxi from the area out front. If there is a taxi driver who is unethical and he or she sees a person looking for a taxi in that area, then the driver knows that you don't know what you are doing and are a prime target to be ripped off. The official taxi rank is on the west side of the station. If you are taking Eurostar, this map will help: http://www.eurostar.com/sites/default/files/pdf/connections_info/GDN_map.pdf

You can enter the hotel address and Gare du Nord and will come up with an approximate fare for 4 passengers and luggage :

It's a good idea to print the complete address of the hotel - Postal Code included - so there won't be any confusion.
Do not go with anyone who approaches you on foot, unless you want an extremely expensive tour of Paris...

Thanks to my fellow travelers for all your help. Can someone tell me what the official taxis look like? Also, would using Uber to get from the train station to the 8th arrondissement be a bad idea? If so, why?

Just use an official " Taxi Parisienne " and you just follow the signs out of the station " taxi" the taxi stand is hard to miss !

True that I don't see Americans staying at Gare du Nord, so seldom that they are hardly noticeable but other international tourists can be seen there. Why don't they avoid the "seedy area?" I see Americans only inside the station (or in the taxi line) since they're catching the EuroStar or going to Belgium. "...seedy area...." Are they afraid of this "seedy area?"

I would recommend that your group take the taxi since you are arriving with luggage in tow in the evening and are totally unfamiliar with the area and city. My introduction to Nord was arriving on the train from Boulogne at 11 pm, solo, in the summer without even knowing where Nord was in relationship to the city, and no reservations.

Uber is not allowed to pick up passengers from the train stations or from the airports. So forget that.

Taxis Parisiens always have a light on top:
Red means they're already taken.
Green means they are for hire.

Not from train stations or airports, but in Paris Uber is fantastic. We just got back from a couple wks in Paris and used Uber many times and regular taxi 3x. Uber comes to the exact spot you tell them (reg taxi you pay more for that) and no money is exchanged making Uber easier and more convenient than regular taxis. We also used the Mêtro, bus, and walked a lot.

We had the Google Map App on our iPhones and it was invaluable for telling us the best and fastest way to go from Point A to Point B. I highly recommend.

Uber also has outrageous "surge charges". Maybe the previous poster did not encounter them, but they jump out when you least expect them.
