I am seeking the advice of all you seasoned travelers. I am planning a trip to Paris this summer, but first we are spending several days in Normandy. Which is better: Fly into CDG, take the train to Caen, then rent a car st the train station OR take a connecting flight to Caen and rent a car at the airport? I have secured accommodations on the coast near Arromanches.
It looks like there are no direct flights from Paris to Caen, you’ll have to take the train or pick up your car at the airport
Interestingly, the French government is banning all internal flights where there is a reasonable train journey available.
Train from CDG to Caen, but be sure to carefully check days and times that the agency is open. Some are not open on weekends, and we found many close for a lunch hour.
Wow. I'm surprised there is no flight from Paris to Caen. Train it is. I never want to rent a car at a Paris airport again. I still have nightmares about my experience at Orly.
Note that you have to change stations in Paris if going to Caen by train from CDG. There are a variety of Paris-local options depending on whether you are taking a taxi, walking, or using the Metro/RER.
Be sure to check lunch closing hours at your car rental agency, and that it is open when you are returning. It may be wise to tell your hotel you need a parking space.
