I will be traveling from Toulouse to Barcelona on August 5th, 2019. Not sure whether to do train, bus or even possibly air - suggestions?
And how far in advance can you purchase rail/bus tickets? Thanks!!

You can buy a ticket on Flixbus or the plane now. The Alsa bus and trains probably 90 days in advance,
I would fly it the bus and train rides take longer than I like

High-speed train, as andrew suggested. You’ll have a local to the TGV station, all on the same ticket.
Watch the French train site rhttps://www.oui.sncf/ and sign up for an alert telling you what day the tickets go on-sale. You do that by trying to book. Since this is too early, the site will ask you if you want to sign up for an alert. You get cheapest prices that way. Be ready to pounce, and remember the time difference, so if tixs are released at 12:01 am in France, it’s 6pm on the East Coast, 5 in the middle, and 4pm on the West.

If you aren't in a hurry you might want to take the mountain railway straight across the Pyrenees from Toulouse to La Tour de Carol (change to Spanish train) and then Barcelona. It will take all day but the countryside is spectacular. Note that despite the distance, the Spanish train is officially part of the Barcelona suburban rail network and you cannot buy tickets in advance (don't worry, the train will not "sell out").
