At the end of our Eastern France tour, we need to get from Aix to Marseiiles. Planning on spending one day in Marseilles before flying back to the US. Thoughts?
Assuming you mean Aix-en-Provence, and not one of the other dozen Aix's in France, I would just get one of the frequent local trains.
The Aix-en-Provence train station is in the town center, just a few blocks south of the Rotonde, very convenient. Trains run to St Charles Station in downtown Marseille.
There are also frequent shuttle (navette) buses (Métropole #50) to Marseille St Charles leaving from the bus station (2 blocks west of the train station)
There is a direct bus service from Aix-en-Provence's central train station to Marseille Provence airport, presumably your port of departure. You can check the 30-minute ride on Google Maps. While I like Marseille itself, I'd save the hassle of the second transfer and spend the extra day in Aix-en-Provence. The train service to Marseille is on the Oui website. Note that the fast TGV train service does not operate from the centre but rather has its own station on the outskirts.
With the local train taking about 50 minutes each way, it's quite feasible as a same-day roundtrip.
The quick and easiest way is by bus. Walk to the bus station which is about 8 minutes from the hotel and buy a ticket (you can do this in advance as the tickets are good for 3 months for any bus date/time). The bus goes directly to the airport in Marseilles between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2; really close together. The cost is very reasonable and buses go very often during the day.
we will be turning in rental car at TGV Avignon and need to get to Marseille for overnite stay near airport prior to flying back to US.
Would like advice on getting to Marseille and hotel close to airport.
Thanks!
TGV Avignon is on the outskirts of town. The fast train to Aix-en-Provence takes about 20 minutes and that TGV station is also on the outskirts. There is a frequent bus shuttle to Marseille Provence airport, again about 20 minutes. This route saves you going out of your way through the city of Marseille. The airport is fairly busy with several hotels adjacent; you could probably take a short taxi ride from the shuttle if you have luggage.
