Best way to buy Paris metro tickets and Museum Pass, arriving from London

I'll be taking the Eurostar from St. Pancras to Gare du Nord and my first museum visit is the Orsay. From GDN I'll walk to my hotel then take the metro from Pigalle station to Solferino station and from there walk to the Orsay.

I initially planned on buying one carnet and the Pass at arrival on GDN but I've heard terrible stories about long lines there for tickets. I don't know if you buy tickets AND the Pass at the same kiosk/window/line. I know I can buy tickets at St. Pancras or the Eurostar paying a little extra, but AFAIK they don't sell the Museum Pass, so if I have to get in the same big line at GDN for the Pass this doesn't really help me.

Maybe I could buy tickets at Pigalle station, but I don't suppose they sell the Pass as well? Getting the Pass at the Orsay is out of the question, right?

Thanks

Besides the Visitor Center at Gare du Nord, you can walk up Rue de Dunkerque to the Anvers Metro station, and there is the Anvers Visitor Center.
Outside, opposite 72 boulevard Rochechouart, Paris 18e.
Open daily from 10am to 6pm (except 25 December, 1 January and 1 May).

Or do like I just did and look it up places on the interactive map.

For what it's worth, I had no problems buying Metro tickets from the vending machine in the (Gare de l'Est) Metro station. My American credit card (which has a chip but no PIN) worked perfectly, and there was no line (though this was in February, not peak tourist season). The only slight hiccup was figuring out how to use the machine itself. There's a wheel you have to turn to toggle between different options. Once we figured that out, we were on our way.

I have no experience with the Paris Museum Pass, but their website has a long list of places in Paris where you can buy one. You should be able to find several locations that are near the places you're going, so that if there's a long line at one, you can try a different one.

They sell carnets and the overpriced but convenient Paris Visite at St Pancras.

Hi Psyche, you can purchase metro tickets at a Tabac, easy, no line. You can pick up a Paris Museum Pass at one of the smaller museums like the Rodin. The line at the Orsay may be long but once you have the Pass, getting in is a snap!

I think the Visitors Centre at Anvers charges a surcharge to buy the PMP. My personal recommendations are to purchase it at a small museum, or from a branch of FNAC (a French books/music/IT shop chain that also sells tickets to various kinds of attraction and event). FNAC does not charge a surcharge.

Any idea how much is the surcharge at Anvers? It's exactly on my way, would be great to buy everything there. If it's not much more money I think it's a better option than wasting time going to another museum.

The closest FNAC I can see on the map is near Gare de l'Est, a 10min walk from GDN.

GDL should have a less busy visitor centre too right?

GDL? Gare de Lyon? Is that anywhere near where you are going?

aside - it is really frustrating when trying to help people when a pile of short unusaual abbreviations is used. I probably know the answer to your question but decyphering abbreviations means I'm not sure of the question.

I don't remember a visitor centre at Paris Gare de l'Est. It is pretty much a long row of platforms, and several food counters and a shop or three. There may be one, I just don't remember it.

I don't quite get why you need to get to the Gare de l'Est if you aren't leaving town. While close to the Gare du Nord it isn't right next door, and the shortest route involves a fairly long fairly steep set of stairs in the street.

If you spend too much time saving time you may find that you have spent too much time.

I never said I need to go do l'Est, I'm just trying to plan the best alternative to buy the Museum Pass just in case the closest option is packed because I've seen comments that it can be.

If I see a huge line at Gare du Nord I'll just buy everything at the Anvers VC regardless of what they charge. Thanks for the help.
