Best way from Paris Nord to Montparnasse?

What is the best (as in safest and economical) way to get from Paris Nord (Rail) to Paris Montparnasse rail station. We are taking the train from Amsterdam to Rennes and need to change stations as we travel through Paris. We'll have two pieces of luggage each, it will be a Friday, mid-day. Is the Metro the only option? Thanks.

With that much junk, spring for a cab.

Metro 4 will do it cheaper without a change, but there's a good bit of tunnel hiking at both ends.
