Best Transport London to Normandy?

[Repost from England Forum]

Hello all, family of 4 (2 adult daughters 18 and 21) doing London (5 nights), Bayeaux (3 nights) and Paris (5 nights) in late June.

Need thoughts on traveling from London to Bayeaux--rail/Eurostar or flight from London to Caen? Planning on renting a car for Normandy to get around the sights, and have seen that Caen is a good spot to rent a car. Lodging is set, so ferry not an option.

All input welcome!

Flying gets you where you want to go quickly. Make sure you know how to get to Southend airport from wherever you're staying in London and flybe are flying on your travel date.

There are (slightly faster) day ferries as well if you can't rebook your lodging.

if you choose flying check a few weeks out to make sure that your flight will operate and check again a few days out.

Flybe (aka "fly maybe") doesn't have the best financial situation although some money was put a little while ago. They got rid of all their jets so all flights are now turbo.

I flew out of Southend once (Easyjet to Nice). A small, very small airport. The train from London does make quite a few stops - it is a commuter train.
